The encapsulation of downhole components such as Hydraulic Control Lines, Single Line Encapsulation, Dual-Line Encapsulation (FLATPACK), and Triple-Line Encapsulation (FLATPACK) has become prevalent in downhole applications. The overlaying of plastic provides several benefits that help to ensure a successful completion.
Encapsulation provides a protective layer to keep the lines from being scratched, dented, and possibly crushed while running in hole. Additionally, encapsulation of several components (Flat Pack) provides a consolidation that will help reduce equipment and personnel that is needed to deploy multiple single components. In many cases, a flat pack is mandatory as rig space can be limited. Encapsulation also helps keep metal to metal contact from occurring and can provide protection to underlying components while in hole, such as a lines that can be across a sand face or in contact with a high rate of gas.
One other advantage of encapsulation is that it eliminates the need for orbital welds. Hydraulic Control Lines, depending on the length of the application, are subjected to raw materials. Orbital welds have become unnecessary in our industry as completions are often greater than the standard yield of a mill produced coil. We have Tungsten Inert Gas and laser beam welding machines to produce seam-welded tubing which allows us to perform a consistently repeatable, high-quality weld. Furthermore, our Cold-Drawing Machines allow us to produce OD Size ranges of 1/8” – 1” and Wall Thicknesses of 0.028” -0.095”, with our common alloy products being 316L, Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, Incoloy 825, and Inconel 625.
Creating increased protection for downhole lines is crucial to ensuring long term installation success. The crush resistance of the lines should be boosted to prevent any damage or interference that could arise while running. Furthermore, protecting the control line against surface abrasions or pinching is essential to its effectiveness. Stress corrosion failure is a serious concern, and any steps taken in the way of avoidance should be taken. An improved clamping profile will also help ensure project success. Finally, encapsulation of the line will provide additional protection while allowing for smooth running.
Encapsulation of the lines can be both single or multiple layers; this will be dependent upon how deep the line needs to go as well as other conditions that it may be exposed to. The multiple layers of encapsulation will help create an extra layer of protection to further ensure long-term success.
