If certain tubing dimensions cannot be welded to the final size, then it needs to be welded at a larger outside diameter and "sunk" in multiple reduction/heat treatment operations. This requires a "floating-plug" operation, using a die with an internal plug that helps control the inside diameter of the tubing. The tubing also has to be heat-treated off-mill in a furnace with a reducing atmosphere, to attain the necessary mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
